Straight razors: traditional, precise and durable shaving

The straight razor delivers an ultra-close shave that’s gentle on the skin and economical in consumables. Whether you’re a beginner or an enthusiast, choose your blade according to your skin, beard, and experience level.

How to choose your straight razor

Blade width

  • 5/8: versatile, recommended for beginners.
  • 6/8: a bit more rigidity and inertia, comfortable on tough beards.
  • 7/8 and above: very covering, better for experienced users.

Grind type

  • Full hollow (1/1): very thin and “singing,” highly tactile feedback.
  • Half hollow (1/2): a balance of flexibility and rigidity.
  • Quarter/near wedge: stiffer, forgiving on very coarse beards.

Point shape

  • Round: the safest for starting out.
  • Square/straight: precise for outlines; requires more attention.
  • French/Spanish: stylish, great visibility in tight areas.

Steel & scales (handle) materials

  • Stainless: simpler upkeep, good corrosion resistance.
  • Carbon steel: takes a very fine edge; needs meticulous drying.
  • Scales: wood, horn, or composites (balance, grip, style).

Care & safety

Before each shave: stropping

Strop on leather (20–40 passes) to realign the edge. A green compound strop can help occasionally—use sparingly.

After shaving

  • Rinse with lukewarm water and dry thoroughly without touching the edge.
  • Apply a tiny drop of oil if you won’t use the razor regularly.
  • Store dry, blade closed and protected (pouch/case).

Honing (stone)

Plan it when stropping no longer restores sharpness (rare if care is regular). If unsure, entrust it to a workshop.

Technique & angles

  • Approx. 30° angle, taut skin, short strokes without pressure.
  • Start with the grain, then across/against as your skin tolerates.

FAQ – Straight razors

Can a beginner use a straight razor?

Yes—choose a 5/8 blade with a round point and take time to learn the basics (stropping, angles, prep).

Stainless or carbon steel?

Stainless: easier maintenance. Carbon: ultra-fine edge; requires rigorous drying and a light oiling.

How often should I strop?

Before each shave: a few dozen passes on leather are enough. Honing on a stone is infrequent.
